A Card Game, a River Crossing, and a Named Village
Clark Dibble found this spot on the Shiawassee River in 1834, where several Native American trails converged, and stayed to found "Dibbleville." William M. Fenton and Robert LeRoy bought the settlement's mill in 1837 and, according to local legend, won the right to name the village in a card game — hence Fentonville, later shortened to Fenton, incorporated in 1863. Development kept coming later than in some neighboring towns: the median Fenton home was built around 1981.
Newer Construction Doesn't Mean Dry
A basement built in the 1980s still used footing-drain materials — often early corrugated plastic — that are now decades old and subject to the same clogging and collapse risk as older clay tile once sediment builds up. Add Fenton's position directly on the Shiawassee River, and a basement here can see water tied to the river's level as much as to a heavy rain.
