Genesee County's Oldest Township, Rebuilt Twice Over
Grand Blanc Township organized on March 9, 1833 — the oldest local government unit in Genesee County, originally covering the survey area that later became Atlas, Burton, Davison, Fenton, Flint, Genesee, Mount Morris, and Mundy townships. The city of Grand Blanc split off as its own government only in 1930, and most of its housing dates from well after that: the median home here was built around 1973, with the bulk of construction concentrated in the postwar decades.
Why a 1970s Foundation Still Needs Attention
A home built in the ranch-and-subdivision boom that followed Grand Blanc's 1864 railroad arrival typically sits on a poured or block foundation with a footing-drain system that was standard for its era — usually clay tile or early corrugated plastic. Those materials were adequate when new, but decades of Genesee County's clay soil expanding and contracting with the seasons can crush or clog them, and a basement that stayed dry for years can start taking on water once that drain finally fails.
