A Settlement Founded on the Creek's Edge
Adam Miller and his family of eleven settled the future core of Swartz Creek in June 1836, building a log cabin near the creek that gave the community its name. A post office followed in 1842, the village was platted in 1877, and the city didn't incorporate until December 1959 — absorbing parts of neighboring Gaines, Clayton, and Flint townships along the way.
Living Close to the Water That Named the Town
Because the original settlement sits directly along Swartz Creek, older lots in town tend to have a shallower water table than properties set back on higher ground elsewhere in the township. Combined with Genesee County's slow-draining clay soil, that shallow water table means grading and exterior drainage carry extra weight in a Swartz Creek waterproofing plan — not just the condition of the foundation wall itself.
